LIGHTS OF HOME page
In days of yesteryear, the kerosene or coal oil lamp
was a welcome addition to nearly all households, especially in rural areas.
The coal oil lamp made it possible to cook, sew, and read after the light of
the sun had faded into the West. People were not relegated to going to bed
with the chickens because of the lack of sunlight. Some people even remained
up and busy with chores or pleasures until the late hours of 9:00 or 10:00
o'clock at night and would have made it even longer if they didn't have to
get up at 4:00 in the morning. Farm chores usually started about that time
and the farmer then made use of a coal oil lantern to light his way down the
path to the barn. Two or three more lanterns in the barn made work possible
long before the sun's rays began to warm and light the barnyard. A good
lantern has proved to be almost a lifesaver at times and many a soul has
been cheered and comforted by the words, "Look, I see the light of a lantern
yonder."
